GOING TO THE RANGE SOLO?

Proper Gun Range Etiquette for New Shooters

Going to the gun range can be an exciting and enjoyable experience for people who are new to shooting. However, it can also be overwhelming for inexperienced shooters who may not be familiar with the proper etiquette, rules, and best practices for gun range use. In this blog post, we will cover important gun range etiquette that all new shooters should know and provide some tips on how to make the most out of their range time.

Gun Range Etiquette

  1. Know the Range Rules: Every gun range has its own set of rules and policies. Before arriving at the range, make sure you know what is and is not allowed, such as what types of firearms are allowed, the maximum caliber size, and any restrictions on rapid fire or shooting from the hip.

  2. Eye and Ear Protection: Hearing and eye protection are essential when shooting at the range. Make sure you bring and wear appropriate protection to avoid any potential injury.

  3. Handle Guns Safely: Always treat every gun as if it is loaded and keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Only load your firearm when you are ready to shoot and unload it before leaving the shooting station.

  4. Be Considerate of Others: When at the range, be respectful of other shooters and their space. Avoid shooting at their targets, talking loudly, or disturbing their shooting experience.

  5. Clean Up After Yourself: Clean up after yourself and leave your shooting station tidy. Pick up your spent shells and dispose of them properly.

Making the Most Out of Range Time

  1. Start with a Familiar Firearm: If you are new to shooting, it is best to start with a firearm that you are familiar with and feel comfortable using. As you gain more experience, you can try shooting different types of firearms.

  2. Practice the Fundamentals: Focus on the fundamentals of shooting, such as grip, stance, breath control, trigger control, and follow-through.

  3. Set a Goal: Before going to the range, set a goal for what you want to achieve. This could be improving your accuracy, learning how to shoot with both eyes open, or working on a specific shooting drill.

  4. Practice Drills: Shooting drills are a great way to improve your skills and increase your confidence at the range. Here is a simple drill you can try:

  • The 5-Shot Drill: Load your firearm with 5 rounds. From a distance of 7 yards, shoot 5 rounds at a target, focusing on the fundamentals of shooting. After each shot, take a step back until you are shooting from a distance of 21 yards. Repeat the drill, focusing on accuracy and speed.

By following proper gun range etiquette and making the most out of your range time, you can have a safe, enjoyable, and productive shooting experience. Happy shooting!
